1 - Read the entire notes manual in advance and highlight the
key concepts. You will get an understanding of the essential background
information that may be assumed in the lecturing.
2 - Ask your colleagues, partners and peers what they expect you
to get out of the seminar and what skills they expect you to improve
upon.
3 - Ask yourself what you want from the seminar. How can the seminar
help you in your career and your personal life? Turn your list
of “wants” into a list of “goals and objectives”.
4 - Write the questions you want to ask at the seminar.
5 - Expect a lot to learn, to have fun, to be engrossed and to
meet interesting people. You will get what you expect.
|
6 - Network and meet new people. Develop a relationship with those
who show a special interest in the topic.
7 - Ask questions and make your views known as those who participate
learn more. Admirers of your ideas may become useful contacts.
8 - Make lots of notes so that your notes manual
is useful in the future. Research shows those who take notes retain
more of what they hear.
9 - Expect results only if you go to the seminar with an open
mind and a positive attitude. When you enter a large shop, not
everything can be of interest; the same analogy applies to attending
an upgrade seminar.
10 - Implement your conclusions and discoveries as soon as you
can to improve your work, your personality and your firm’s profitability.

When
you are planning Continuing Professional Education (CPE):
- seminars in-house for staff
- retreat for partners
- conference for your group, association or society, you will
naturally want to make it educational, informative and enjoyable.
• Theories
from the text books are fine but how are they to be applied for
success in the real life professional world? Many seminars and
conferences can be long on concept and short on implementation.
Participants are often left wondering “So what should I do with
this?” or “How will that pay my bills?”
